With tree care, it is important to begin pruning all trees from a young age. This method is called preventive pruning. Preventive pruning makes sure that trees did not require much corrective pruning as they grow.

Here are some specific things to do when you prune or trim your trees:

As much as possible, avoid leaving stubs. Your cut should be until a bud is left, or the main trunk, or lateral branches.

Use the three cut method for larger limbs.

Avoid cutting greater than one-fourth of the tree’s crown in one cut

Cut outside the collar of the branch and then return to the main stem

In the winter, it is best to do structural pruning. Winter is a dormant season for trees. It helps you see the structure better.

The best time to prune any tree is when the tree is flowering.
